Education
It is our belief an enhanced knowledge of the cultured pearl product category results in greater sales and an increased passion for pearls.
The lack of knowledge presents the biggest obstacle for the successful sale of pearls.
Jewelers who know more will eventually make larger profits.
Product knowledge means that the sales person is able to understand the wishes of the customer and can answer questions.
With that in mind, we address in this issue the topic of treatments and coloration, a subject often avoided .

It is a known fact that cultured pearls are bleached, polished, artificially stained and dyed, irradiated and coated in order to improve their appearance. The fact develops into a problem if no one talks about the treatments. There are no fixed boundaries between what is necessary and tolerable (for instance cleaning and polishing the pearls after harvesting) and what is deception. Also, not all methods used can afterwards be recognized.

Creating An International Pearl Organization
Tuesday: April 18, 2006
Tahitipresse reports that Tahitian cultured pearl pioneer Robert Wan is involved in talks to create an International Pearl Organization, but the five leading pearl producers and wholesalers have yet to agree on funding the IPO, according to a report from Hong Kong.
The other persons involved in recent talks in Hong Kong were John Kelly of Paspaley Pearling, Co. Pty. Ltd; in Australia; Leung Sik Wah of Cogent Trading Co. Ltd. in Hong Kong; Yoshihiro Shimizu of Hosei Co. Ltd. in Japan; and Sonny Sethi of Tara & Sons Inc. in the U.S.A.
According to the Internet website Pearl Net World.com, operated by Jewelry News Asia magazine, all five participants "reportedly supported the formation of the IPO but were concerned about funding. There was a suggestion that a certain percentage of the proceeds from major international pearl auctions could be used to fund the new body, but no conclusion has yet been reached."
Wan, the world's biggest producer of Tahitian cultured pearls, holds regular auctions each year in Hong Kong and Kobe, Japan. Wan is scheduled to hold his 28th international auction in Kobe from May 16-17 and his 29th auction in Hong Kong from June 22-23.
Wan, owner of pearl farms and Tahiti Perles, a chain of Tahitian cultured pearl jewelry boutiques in French Polynesia, is currently chairman of Perles de Tahiti, the Papeete-based trade organization that promotes Tahitian pearls worldwide.

COOK ISLANDS:
Pearl Authority To Be Resurrected
Monday: January 16, 2006
Cook Islands pearl industry is making a comeback, according to Cook Islands News.
The interim board of the Cook Islands Pearl Authority (CIPA) will appoint a chief executive soon in the hope of reviving the defunct body from a decade ago.
This follows a report that pearl exports increased by 84 per cent to NZD$2.9 million in 2004-05, confirming a steady recovery from the effects of an algae outbreak in early 2001.
CIPA was set up by government in 1994 to control and monitor the industry and help pearl farmers market their pearls. The CIPA Act was passed in 1993 and funding was sourced from the Asian Development Bank for an initial three-year period.
In 1996 the body was expected to be self sufficient but it became redundant when it was no longer funded and because of the overwhelming opposition to it from the industry.
Farmers at the time were suspicious of the CIPA and saw it as government interference within their industry.
The Pearl Guild made up of retailers and wholesalers was established in response to the set up of CIPA. In 1996 the Cook Islands Pearl Federation was established by farmers….COOK ISLANDS NEWS/PNS
