Report from Hong Kong on the state of the pearl Industry

The September Hong Kong Jewelry & Watch Fair — Asia's biggest jewelry event — held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and the AsiaWorld-Expo  from 18-23 September 2006, attracted 2,500 exhibitors from 40 countries and regions and more than 40,000 visitors from 139 countries.

Pearls caught a lot of attention, fueled by two pearl auctions that took place during the fair — the Paspaley South Sea Pearl auction and the Robert Wan Tahiti Perles auction and the world's single largest display of pearls and pearl jewellery is located at Hall 2 of HKCEC and Hall 3 of AWE.  Companies Displayed a variety of pearls from the finest South Sea and Tahitian to Akoya and freshwater pearls.

The variety of pearl product available on the market today is the most significant trend in the pearl industry . Large , FWP , small South Sea ,Tahitian., Keshi ,  baroque coin and Larger pettal pearls larger than ever before seen. Nucleated Freshwater pearls with tails in large quantities. Nucleated freshwater pearls that are perfectly round are showing up in smaller Quanitys . Chinese Akoya getting better all the time. Bleached Tahitian (Chocolate) pearls are showing up in greater quantities.

This ever changing cornucopia of pearl product is great for the pearl industry providing new and exciting raw material and inspiration to jewelry designers. The pearl segment of the industry continues to flourish as  new products designs appear on runways and celebrities. As seen in the recent CPAA insert “Portraits in Pearls”

The following is a quick review of what you need to know to let your customer have confidence in your pearl knowledge.

The Coconut Pearl

Certainly the rarest and most valuable botanical jewel is the legendary "coconut pearl" that occasionally forms inside a coconut (Cocos nucifera).

Like the pearls of oysters and giant clams, it is a shiny calcareous sphere. It is difficult to place a monetary value on a genuine coconut pearl, but the odds of finding one in a coconut are certainly less than one in a million. To put it another way, if you cracked open and thoroughly examined one coconut every 15 minutes during a normal eight hour work day, it would take roughly 80 years to go through a million coconuts!
