The Tucson Gem and Mineral Showcase brings wholesalers and buyers from all over the world to the Old Pueblo. What started out as small gathering 51 years ago has turned into 39 different venues that spread over a 15-to-20-mile radius. There will be 35 shows at 39 locations this year, featuring more than four-thousand dealers.

Native Americans of the Atlantic Coastal areas and the Mississippi River Basin were the first to collect and use U.S. freshwater mussel pearls and shells. Pearl pendants and ear pendants were worn by both sexes and both pearl and shell were used for decorative purposes on articles of clothing. Some of the tribes used pearls as tributes, reportedly Powhattan (Pocahontas' father) had large stores of pearls received as tribute. Pearls are the perfect wedding accessory, appropriate for brides, members of the bridal party, and guests. The breathtaking beauty of pearl jewelry is sure to add to the joy and fond memories of a wedding day. Jewelry stores, too often, miss the opportunity to parlay this fact into profitable sales.

Most often the engagement ring is the first contact the store has with the wedding and store personnel are well trained to make that sale. The next encounter with the couple is for the bands. This selling opportunity is the key to selling pearls. This is the perfect time to inquire if the bride has an appropriate strand of pearls to accessorize her wedding gown. You know pearls are the perfect wedding accessory and there are genuine cultured pearls for every budget and to suit every fashion sense. From Crown Pearls that can be passed as a family heirloom, (what's more sentimental than mom's wedding pearls?) versus a couple with less means, freshwater pearls are the perfect answer. Too often, the jeweler abdicates these high margin sales to the bridal shop that sells the bride overpriced simulated pearls. Gifts for the wedding party, such as dainty freshwater necks and earrings are perfect. Again, this is an area often overlooked by the jeweler. Store personnel should be trained not to miss this multi unit sale so often left to others.
